Following basic and higher speciality training in Egypt at the residency program of the Ophthalmology department, Alexandria University Hospitals,
Ahmed joined the team at Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton, UK for a two-and-a-half-year fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment diseases where he had combined supervision for his PhD thesis between Alexandria University professors and Professor Christopher Liu at Brighton and Sussex University hospitals.
Appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist by St James University Hospital, Leeds and honorary lecturer of Ophthalmology at Leeds University May 2021
Aside from having a wide range of experience in the management of complex and challenging cataract cases, using premium and multifocal intraocular lenses, he is also an experienced laser and lens refractive surgeon.
Certified by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists as a refractive surgeon through obtaining certificate of laser refractive surgery (CertLRS October 2021)
Joined the UK GMC Specialist register in March 2020 after an extensive review process and assessment of training experience and qualifications
Was awarded PhD in Ophthalmology by Alexandria University in Egypt studying combined cataract surgery with the novel Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) techniques (September 2020)
Did Master of Science in Ophthalmology studying the use of the new laser technology in wavefront customised refractive correction of complex eyes (January 2016)
Studied and passed fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth 2017) exams, fellowship of the Royal College of Edinburgh (FRCSEd 2016)
Ahmed has published more than 20 articles in international peer reviewed journals including 3 book chapters and one Textbook on Cataract surgery.
Has contributed to national and international courses and workshops on cataract surgery, laser refractive surgery, immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery, anterior lamellar and endothelial keratoplasty techniques.
